Twitter Outage Wreaks Havoc: We Survived!

You may have heard this morning Twitter experienced its longest outage in 8 months when the popular social networking site went down for… GASP… more than an hour. For many users, this was deathly. Here at DGWB, there were only a few affected but it still struck hard.

DGWB PR and Social Media Coordinator Selena Devore gathered herself long enough to describe her experience:

“It was horrible,” Devore faintly recalled shortly after being resuscitated. “Twitter.com sent me to a blank white screen with no comfort from the ‘fail whale.’ In Hootsuite, all I was able to pull out was ‘Twitter API down.’ It was madness! MADNESS, I tell you!”

News sites such as Mashable rely heavily on social media to push their newest stories. Mashable published a few times throughout the outage to state the obvious, ‘Twitter Is Still Down.’

“How were people even able to communicate this crisis?” said DGWB Social Media Coordinator Amanda Vo. “Twitter people were flocking to Facebook to lodge their complaints. I mean, someone had to be listening somewhere, right?”

Was there a lesson behind the chaos? Do we rely too heavily on social networking? Tweet us your thoughts @DGWB. If it’s up…
